Online Winter Programming


Hello Explorers!

We’re excited to be offering Online Programming and Workshops for the January – March Winter Term!

Participants will receive live instruction from our experienced Instructors and limited class sizes will allow students to meet new people and build friendships! We have a variety of programs and workshops to choose from for all ages and levels with new options being added throughout the term.

Mondays: For the LOVE of Musical Theatre

with Liz & Maggie!

4:30 – 5:30pm  •  Grades 4 – 6 • $140 for the 7-week Package

As a compliment to the Explore It! Musical Theatre Programme – coming in March! – students can now hone their performance skills in this Musical Theatre Program! This is a workshop-style program focused on learning and development in the areas of not only dance, dramatic arts and song, but also in the many areas of theatre beyond these, such as devised theatre and play-writing, rehearsal techniques, design, choreography, improvisation and comedy, costumes, props, front of house, stage management and direction, audition techniques and more. Lead by the experienced Explore It! Musical Theatre team and based on the hands on learning the team does each summer with Broadway professionals in New York City, this program is perfect for any student interested in Exploring their path to Broadway – and all the stops along the way!

Tuesdays: STEM Science Explorers with Rebecca!

4:00 – 5:00pm  •  Grades 1 – 4 • $140 for the 8-week Package

January 19 : Catapults

During our first week together, students will review simple machines and use the scientific method to build, test and refine their own catapult!

January 26 : The Principles of Flight!

Students will learn about how airplanes stay up in the air, exploring the principles of lift, weight, thrust and drag as they create, test and refine different paper airplane designs.

February 2 : Dancing Popcorn

Today students will begin a three week exploration of chemical reactions by using science to make popcorn kernels start to dane – right before their eyes! 

February 9 : Lava Lamps

During the second week of exploring chemical reactions, students will create their very own lava lamps and learn about hydrophobic and hydrophilic substances while examining the relationship between oil and water. 

February 16 : Volcanoes!

For the final chemical reactions experiment, students will learn about volcanoes and create their own which will mimic a real life eruption! 

February 23 : Phases of the Moon

In this edible astronomy activity, we will recreate the different shapes of the Moon with yummy Oreo cookies. Students will learn about who Wang Zhenyi was, and understand the basics of her discoveries regarding lunar and solar eclipses.

March 2 : Become a Paleontologist!

This week students will learn about Mary Anning and the basics of her discoveries regarding bezoars and complete ichthyosaur and plesiosaur skeletons. We will then recreate our own dinosaur skeletons! At the end of class we will also prepare the bubble solution we will need for next week. 

March 9 : The Science of Bubbles!

During the final week, students will explore the science of bubbles; learning about surface tension and volume, why bubbles are round, and why bubbles burst. We will explore holding bubbles, blowing bubbles inside of bubbles, and using different household objects to create bubble wands!

Wednesdays: Active Yoga Story Time Fun with Liz

3:30 – 4:00pm  •  Grades JK – 1 • $5 per class

Welcome to Storybook Yoga where children’s literature and yoga unite! This engaging and active after school program will combine creativity, story telling, yoga, movement and relaxation. Yoga at a young age builds strength and flexibility, develops focus and concentration, and promotes a love for oneself inside and out! Bend and stretch your way to a new you in Story Time Yoga with Liz and end your day with a SMILE!

 

Wednesdays: The Science of Art with Mirka

4:00 – 5:00pm  •  Grades 1 – 5 • $70 for the 4-week Package

.. And, the Art of Science! Expand your scientific mind in this program and discover the unique connections between the arts and the sciences! By participating in fun, hands-on activities and experiments, participants will deepen their appreciation for how scientific principles inform the creation of art, and how art can help us understand the inner workings of the world around us. Whether it’s by learning the science of acoustics to build their own musical instruments, or by exploring colour theory to create incredible works of visual art, The Science of Art is sure to pique the curiosity of budding artists and scientists alike!

January 20 : Magic Blossoming Flowers
In this session, we’ll explore the science of absorption and osmosis, as it applies to flowers! Participants will create their own paper flowers that will blossom when placed in a bowl of water.

January 27 : Fizzing Volcanoes
This week’s lesson puts an artistic twist on the classic volcano science experiment! Participants will mix paint with baking soda, and create a painting of a volcano. Add a bit of vinegar, and watch your painting come to life!

February 3 : Musical Instruments
In this session, participants will learn the science between sound waves, pitch, and frequency, and create two musical instruments out of common household items.

February 10 : Insect Symmetry
In this week’s class we’ll explore the basics of insect anatomy, and create our own insect print using water soluble markers.

 
 
 

Wednesdays: Scientific Illustration with Mirka

4:00 – 5:00pm  •  Grades 2 – 6 • $70 for the 4-week Package

Did you know that artists and scientists often work hand in hand? Scientific art helps us understand the world around us by creating rich and beautiful visual explanations of scientific theories. In this multidisciplinary program, participants will get the chance to become scientific illustrators themselves by drawing various wonders of the scientific world, including dinosaur fossils, da Vinci inspired flying machines, and weird and wonderful rain forest critters.

February 17 : Drawing Dinosaurs
There were no photographers around in the Mesozoic Era to capture what dinosaurs really looked like, and so we have to rely on artists’ interpretations instead! In this session, participants will draw a dinosaur based on its fossil remains.

February 24 : The Coral Reef
The Coral Reef is one of the most beautiful and diverse ecosystems on the planet. In this class, we’ll do a deep dive on the creatures and plants that inhabit its rich habitat, and draw our own underwater landscape.

March 3 : Leonardo da Vinci Flying Machines
da Vinci is best known as the artist who painted the Mona Lisa, but he was also a scientist and engineer! In this class, participants will create their own flying machine, inspired by da Vinci’s designs.

March 10 : Ant Colonies and Underground Habitats
We don’t think about it much, but there is a whole universe operating right under our feet! This week we’ll dig into the rich ecosystems just below the earth’s surface, and draw our own functional ant colony.

 

Wednesdays: Write Your Own Adventure: Video Game Design with Chelsea

4:30 – 5:30pm  •  Grades 3 – 6 • $140 for the 8-week Package

Love making up stories? Role playing characters or adventures? During this Write Your Own Adventure program, students will use storytelling, imagination, and basic coding to create their very own, interactive, choose your own adventure video game. No coding experience necessary.

  • Requirements: Participants will need a reliable connection to the internet, and a laptop or desktop that is capable of downloading files. Please note: tablets, ipads or Google Chrome Books usually do not have this capability. The program we will be learning to use is called Twine. Prior to our first session, please visit https://twinery.org/ and download Version 1.4.2.

Thursdays: Disney Dance Party! with Hayley

4:15 – 5:15pm  •  Grades JK – 2 • $100 for the 8-week Package

Do you love to dance and move, always grooving around the house? Join us for this Disney Dance Party and see where your energy can take you! Participants will learn elements of diverse dance styles, while exploring the possibilities of their own movement. Each week will feature a different Disney theme and songs – to inspire movement, melody and fun for all. What hidden Disney-dance skills do you have, ready to groove to the surface?

January 21 : “Hakuna Matata!” Let’s help Simba and his friends find their way back to Pride Rock. In this session we will explore some creative movement for various animals from the Lion King. 

January 28 : Time to get dressed for the ball. Let’s join Cinderella and Prince Charming on the dance floor before the clock strikes midnight! 

February 4 : Join Ariel in an Under the Sea adventure, where we will search for sunken treasures! 

February 11 : Lets join Elsa, Ana, and our friend Olaf on an icy adventure by making some ice sculptures with our bodies! Let’s see how well we can be ‘frozen’ in a pose! 

February 18 : We are going to dance to ‘the infinity and beyond’ in this session! We will join our friends from Andy’s room for a movement exploration. See ya there Woody and Buzz!

February 25 : Moana needs our help restoring the heart of Te Fiti! We will explore the four elements in this session.

March 4 : We are heading on an adventure to meet Rapunzel and Flynn for the beautiful lantern ceremony. We will have to avoid the Royal guards and Mother Gothel along the way! 

March 11 : DANCE PARTY! In this session we will have a variety of Disney music and surprise themes to dance to, along with some fun games! 

 
 
 

Thursdays: Fine Art & Design Studio with Aaron

4:30 – 5:30pm  •  Grades 2 – 6 • $140 for the 8-week Package

Unleash your creative genius in Fine Art & Design Studio! From drawing and illustration to digital art, and even photography, there’s no end to what can be created. Come and express your talents in Fine Art & Design Studio!

January 21 : Collage

For our first session, we will be taking an image of your choice and turning it into a colourful collage!

January 28 : Digital Map Making

(Part 1 of 3) We will be escaping into fantasy and building our own world’s starting with a map of our own design.

February 4 : Fantasy Architecture 

(Part 2 of 3) Using the maps we designed the week before, we will now design the interesting buildings and structures built in our fantasy worlds.

February 11 : Character Creation

(Part 3 of 3) Now that the worlds have been designed, we will spend this week designing characters that inhabit them.

February 18 : Digital Photography

An intro to digital photography. We will learn to take selfies, upload them and alter our own faces.

February 25 : Designing a Deck of Cards

In this week’s session, we will use our artistic skills to design our own deck of cards. 

March 4 : Line Art

In this week’s session, we will take a look at the intricate artform of line art and create our own.

March 11 : Digital Pointillism

Similar to what we did in week one, we will use everything we’ve learned over the weeks with digital art and design and create our own digital pointillism artwork.

Fridays: Creative Kids Yoga with Liz!

3:45 – 4:45pm  •  Grades 2 – 6 • $10 per Class

Bend, stretch, jump, and jive in Creative Kids Yoga with Liz! We will combine yoga with movement, creativity, and imagination – exploring through fun and play. Together, we’ll embark on yoga journeys around the world; we’ll become Yogi Superheroes to save the planet; and we’ll learn the wisdom of ancient Yogi Wizards to create magic right on our own mats! Join us and find the inner yogi in you!
