This exciting program empowers young artists to bring their superhero stories, magical realms, and unique characters to life through drawing and illustration. Whether they dream of crafting action-packed adventures or designing quirky cartoon personalities, kids will explore the fundamentals of comic book creation in a fun, hands-on environment. They’ll learn to develop dynamic characters, design captivating storylines, and master essential techniques like paneling, speech bubbles, and sequential storytelling. Using a variety of art materials—including pencils, markers, and colored pencils—children will sharpen their drawing skills, enhance their visual storytelling abilities, and gain the confidence to create their very own comic book by the end of the program. Let their creativity take center stage as they transform their ideas into illustrated stories, one panel at a time!

In this program, it will be up to the Instructor(s) to gauge the interests of the group and decide how best to structure the overall term. A suggested 10-week term plan is as follows:

Lesson 1: Introduction to Comic Books & Storytelling
  • Overview of comic book storytelling and its unique elements.
  • Show examples of different comic styles (superhero, manga, humor, fantasy).
  • Brainstorm ideas: What makes a great comic book story?
  • Activity: Sketch rough character ideas and write a short comic premise.
Lesson 2: Character Creation – Heroes, Villains & Sidekicks
  • Understanding character roles and personalities in comics.
  • Discuss character design (costumes, expressions, and body language).
  • Activity: Design a main character and sketch different facial expressions.
Lesson 3: Developing a Story & Plot
  • Basics of story structure: beginning, middle, and end.
  • How to create conflict and resolution in a short comic.
  • Activity: Write a 3-5 sentence plot summary for the comic.
Lesson 4: Paneling & Page Layout
  • Introduction to paneling: grid layouts, pacing, and perspective.
  • How to guide the reader’s eye through the story.
  • Activity: Create a rough thumbnail layout for a comic page.
Lesson 5: Speech Bubbles & Sound Effects
  • Types of speech bubbles (dialogue, thoughts, exclamations).
  • Using sound effects (BOOM! ZAP! WHOOSH!) to enhance storytelling.
  • Activity: Add speech bubbles and sound effects to a sample comic page.
Lesson 6: Drawing Dynamic Poses & Action Scenes
  • Techniques for drawing movement and action poses.
  • Understanding perspective and foreshortening in comics.
  • Activity: Draw a character in an action pose (running, jumping, fighting).
Lesson 7: Backgrounds & Setting the Scene
  • How to create simple but effective backgrounds.
  • Using perspective to add depth to scenes.
  • Activity: Design a background setting for a comic scene.
Lesson 8: Inking & Colouring Techniques
  • How inking brings characters and scenes to life.
  • Colouring techniques with markers, coloured pencils, or ink.
  • Activity: Ink and colour a comic panel or character drawing.
Lesson 9: Finalizing & Assembling the Comic Book
  • Organizing pages for a complete mini-comic.
  • Adding final details, borders, and finishing touches.
  • Activity: Assemble all elements into a short 1-2 page comic story.
Lesson 10: Showcase & Celebration!
  • Sharing completed comics with classmates.
  • Discussing what they learned and their favourite part of the process.
  • Activity: Comic book gallery walk or mini-presentation.
